The Story Behind the Scarf

A summer garden is never truly still.

Even in its quietest moments, bees work beneath the lavender, birds settle among the branches and petals turn almost imperceptibly towards the light. Small lives move through grass, hedge and shade, each following a rhythm beyond our understanding.

What the Flowers Wait For began as a piece of prose about an old garden awaiting the arrival of butterflies. In the story, the roses appear to sense what is coming first. A robin grows watchful. Squirrels, hedgehogs, dragonflies, a fox and an old toad gather within the garden, each drawn into the same atmosphere of expectation.

Nothing has announced itself, yet everything seems to know.

When the butterflies finally arrive, they move above the flowers like the answer to a question the whole garden has been asking. Their presence is delicate and brief, but for that moment, the garden becomes complete.

The scarf was created from that imagined ceremony: a summer afternoon in which every flower and creature appears connected by a shared, unspoken attention.

Before the Butterflies Arrive

There is something magical about the moment before beauty reveals itself.

We often notice the butterfly but overlook the world that has made its arrival possible: the flowers that provide nectar, the leaves that sheltered its earliest life, the warmth that allows it to fly and the changing season that calls it into the garden.

What the Flowers Wait For looks beyond the butterfly alone. It considers the whole living stage on which it appears.

The roses open. Lavender releases its scent into the warmth. Bees move between the flowers and birds watch from the branches. The air itself seems altered by the possibility of what is about to happen.

Then colour rises above colour.
