The Story Behind the Scarf

Some patterns stay with us because they are tied to memory.

The inspiration for the Thackray signature pattern came from an ornamental design on a seat in my grandfather’s study. It was part of the room in the way certain family objects become part of a home: quietly present, deeply familiar and full of meaning without ever needing to explain itself.

I remember the detail more clearly than many larger things. It belonged to the chair, but also to the atmosphere around it. The study had its own sense of order and stillness, formed by old furniture, familiar objects and the presence of someone whose taste had shaped the room over many years.

The pattern became inseparable from that feeling.

In creating the scarf, the remembered ornament was reworked into a design that could live beyond the original object. Placed around the Thackray emblem and translated into silk, it became part of the visual language of the house.

The finished scarf does not attempt to reproduce my grandfather’s study. It carries forward something quieter: the impression of a place and the belief that even the smallest decorative detail can hold a family story.

The Signature of the House

Most Thackray scarves begin with a poem, a place, an animal or a particular memory. They are created in very small editions and are never reprinted once those editions have sold.

Here, ornament becomes a form of inheritance. A detail remembered from one room is carried into the present, not preserved unchanged, but given a new life in silk.
