The Story Behind the Twilly

Where Quiet Grows began before the poem had a name.

I had woken early, before the rest of the world seemed to have stirred. Dew still clung to the leaves and the flowers were beginning to open. For a little while, there was nowhere else to be.

Moving slowly through the garden, I found a profound happiness in its smallest acts of care: training a stem, pulling a weed, touching the soil and noticing what had changed overnight. The work did not feel like another task to complete. It felt less like escaping from life and more like returning to it.

Gardens bring us back to what is immediately before us. A new bud on a stem. The smell of damp earth. A leaf beginning to uncurl. The return of a flower we had almost forgotten planting. Nothing happens instantly, yet something is always happening.

There was no grand revelation that morning. Only the quiet certainty that this was enough.

The poem grew from the thought that perhaps this is where we are meant to be: close to the soil, caring for something beyond ourselves and allowing the natural world to set the pace.

Each Thackray piece begins with words. A poem becomes an image, and the image becomes silk. In Where Quiet Grows, both remain physically present, connecting the finished twilly to the morning from which it came.

It is a reminder that peace does not always need to be found somewhere distant. Sometimes it is already growing outside the door.

Where Quiet Grows

I walk among the rows at dawn,
the dew still clings, the world feels drawn.
Each leaf a prayer, each bloom a sign,
that peace can root in hands like mine.

With hands in soil, my mind finds rest,
each stem I train, each weed addressed.
The garden speaks in calm and grace,
a slower world, a sacred place.
