Silk scarf sizes: choosing a square or a twilly

A square scarf and a narrow twilly ask different things of a wardrobe. The square can be opened at the shoulders or folded into a band; the twilly begins narrow and stays that way. Choose the shape for the way you expect to wear it.

What a 90cm square allows
The square gives you a choice about how much of the artwork appears. Fold it diagonally into a triangle for a broad area of pattern. Roll or fold that triangle into a band to bring a smaller passage of colour to the neck.
At the shoulders, the same scarf provides a light drape. It will not cover the body in the same way as a much larger wrap. If shoulder coverage is your main reason for buying, measure a piece of cloth you already own before deciding.
At the neck, start with a loose tie and adjust it while wearing the coat or shirt you have in mind. The collar takes up space of its own; a knot that looks right over a plain top may feel crowded beneath a buttoned coat.
What a twilly allows
A twilly is useful when you want a narrow line of silk without folding a square. Where Quiet Grows measures 88cm long and 6cm wide, with artwork on one side and the complete poem on the other.
Its length must accommodate both the place it is tied and the knot. Around a bag handle, check the handle’s dimensions and any rough fittings before wrapping it. Around the neck, keep the tie comfortable; the ends need not be symmetrical.
Choosing a size as a gift
Look at the scarves the person already wears. Does she favour a small knot at the throat, a generous headscarf, or silk left loose beneath a jacket? Those habits tell you more than her dress size.
If there is no existing scarf to guide you, think about her clothes. A square offers several ways to experiment. A twilly makes a more specific choice: narrow, with less fabric to arrange.
Start with the intended fold
Lay a tape measure across a clean table to see the actual dimensions. Then look at the product photographs and imagine which part of the artwork will remain visible in your usual fold. The size and the drawing are making the choice together.
