Rooted in Poetry. Woven in Silk. Inspired by the Land.

Thackray is a British boutique design studio shaped by the quiet beauty of the English countryside and the enduring influence of poetry and heritage. It was founded in 2003, beginning in a university studio with a hand-bound poetry book titled Moments, a project that sparked a lifelong exploration of the connection between words and design.

The studio was established by an artist and designer with a background in publishing and a deep creative connection to both language and landscape. After working in London and collaborating with the luxury hotel group Belmond, they returned to a more personal way of working. Thackray grew from this shift, bringing together craft, storytelling, and visual expression.

At Thackray, each piece begins with poetry. The written word comes first, capturing a feeling, a memory, or a moment in time. From this, the design takes shape, resulting in silk scarves that hold more than pattern or colour. They hold a story.

The studio draws from the richness of rural Britain. Ancient woodland, hedgerows, stone churches, and cottage gardens all serve as inspiration. Architecture, plant life, wildlife, and traditions are reimagined through a poetic lens and transformed into visual form.

This connection to the land is also personal. The founder's family worked in the silk-printing industry in 1950s Cheshire, a region that was once a key part of Britain’s silk trade. That northern heritage, with its misty fields and quiet dedication to craft, continues to guide the studio's vision.

Every Thackray scarf is made from pure Mulberry silk, chosen for its softness, natural sheen, and strength. Each design is screen-printed with great care, preserving the richness and detail of the original artwork.

The studio produces only 50 scarves per design. They are never reprinted, making each one a unique and collectible piece of wearable art.

In a world of fast fashion and constant change, Thackray offers something different. A return to the poetic, the personal, and the carefully made. A quiet knowing of the land.
