The Story Behind the Scarf

It is strange what childhood chooses to keep.

We might expect to remember the grand view, the beach itself or the hours spent exploring rock pools. Instead, memory often attaches itself to something seen on the way: a gate, a garden and a bird glimpsed before the coast opened below.

The walk to the cove had its own rhythm. There was the anticipation of the sea before it could be seen, the changing air and the knowledge that the path would eventually reveal the water.

Then came the house.

The peacock seemed unlikely there, moving through an ordinary garden with the solemnity of something taking part in a private ceremony. Its colours belonged to another kind of landscape, yet year after year it remained part of this one.

Once we had seen it, the walk was never quite complete without looking for it again. Would it still be there? Would a flash of blue and green appear beyond the gate?

Sometimes it did. For a moment, the bird became the brightest thing in Cornwall.

The Landmarks We Make Our Own

Not every landmark appears on a map.

Some are known only to a family or to the people who return to the same place over many years. They may be no more than a particular tree, a bend in the road or a bird in a garden, but they tell us where we are and how close we have come to somewhere loved.

The peacock became one of those private landmarks.

It did not belong to the cove, yet it became inseparable from the memory of reaching it. The garden, gate and vivid bird marked the point between the journey and arrival. Beyond them waited the path, the first sight of the sea and another summer day on the Cornish coast.

That is why the peacock remained when other details faded. It carried not only its own extraordinary colour, but the anticipation of everything that came after it.
