The Story Behind the Scarf

Some designs stay with us before we understand why.

As a child, I did not have the language for geometry, ornament or visual rhythm. I only knew that the tiled floor in Buxton made me want to stop and look more closely.

Its colours were unusual. Black brought weight and structure; pale pink softened it. Together, they created something that felt formal and playful at once. The pattern was fixed beneath my hands, yet seemed to be filled with movement. Lines changed direction, shapes met and separated, and the floor appeared to lead somewhere beyond the hallway itself.

While the adults walked over it, I wanted to follow it. I crawled from tile to tile, tracing its routes as though the pattern contained a meaning that might reveal itself if I looked for long enough.

To everyone else, it may have been part of the building. To me, it became a place in its own right.

The Hallway at Buxton was created from that particular kind of childhood attention: the ability to become completely absorbed by something others may barely notice.

A Pattern Remembered

Memory does not always preserve the things we expect.

I do not remember the furniture in the building or what lay beyond the hallway. I cannot recall the conversations taking place above me. What remained was the floor: its contrast, rhythm and strange ability to hold my attention.

Perhaps that is because pattern offers a child something both ordered and open-ended. It repeats, but it also invites the imagination to travel through it. A tile can become a marker, a shape can become a territory and a line can become a path.

Years later, the black and pale pink still felt vivid enough to become the beginning of a scarf. The design does not simply reproduce an old floor. It carries the memory of encountering pattern before I knew how to describe its effect.

Each Thackray scarf begins with words. A story becomes an image, and the image becomes silk. Here, the story is carried through geometry, colour and the enduring impression of a surface that most people would have passed over without a second thought.
