The Story Behind the Scarf

Some gardens remain with us because they were part of how we first imagined the world.

My grandparents’ garden in Woodley was one of those places. I remember the flowers, the paths between them and the corners in which a child could become briefly invisible. The garden was real, but it was also transformed by imagination. A border became a distant landscape. A narrow path led somewhere unexplored. Each flower belonged to a story that existed only while I was there.

What remains most clearly is the feeling of being held by that place. It was somewhere I could wander freely while always feeling safe, surrounded by colour and the familiar presence of my grandparents nearby.

They cared for the garden beautifully. The flowers were tended with patience and real attention, season after season. Nothing appeared hurried or accidental. Each plant had been given its place, and the quiet order of the garden reflected the devotion with which it was maintained.

The Garden at Woodley was created from those intertwined memories: the garden my grandparents cultivated and the larger, imagined world I discovered within it.

A Garden Loved into Bloom

A garden records the care given to it.

It holds the hours spent planting, pruning, watering and waiting. It bears the signs of changing weather, passing seasons and the hands that return to it year after year. In Woodley, that care belonged to both of my grandparents.

As a child, I did not understand the patience required to make a garden flourish. I simply knew it as a place filled with life. Looking back, I can see that its beauty came from hundreds of small acts, performed quietly and without ceremony.

That knowledge has become part of the memory. The garden was beautiful because it was loved, and because two people had tended it together over time.
