The Story Behind the Scarf

In the dream, the fox was dressed with impossible care.

His suit was dark graphite, neat through the waist and confident at the shoulder. His shirt was crisp, his tie sat perfectly and his polished shoes moved lightly across the floor.

He appeared to know every step before the music reached it.

The cane was part of the dance. At times it led, tracing the next movement ahead of him. At others it followed, turning neatly through his paw before resting beneath one arm. His tail moved with its own discreet intelligence, never hurried and never late.

Nothing about the scene seemed strange while the dream was happening. That is the particular certainty of dreams. A fox may arrive dressed for the theatre, begin to dance and appear entirely at home within the impossible.

The image remained after waking: half magnificent, half absurd and too complete to forget.

A Dance With No Audience

The fox did not seem to be dancing for anyone.

There was no applause to win and no one to impress. He was not demonstrating his elegance, although elegant he undoubtedly was. He danced because the movement pleased him and because, within the private logic of the dream, dancing was simply what he had chosen to do.

That was the charm of him.

There is freedom in enjoying something without turning it into a performance for others. The fox possessed that freedom completely. He was confident without being self-conscious, theatrical without seeking attention and entirely at ease within his own ceremony.

His clothes gave him formality, but the dance belonged to instinct. Tailoring and wildness occupied the same figure, producing something poised, eccentric and unexpectedly joyful.
