The Story Behind the Scarf

Some childhood memories survive without a particular event to preserve them.

The camping trip near Cambridge was not marked by anything dramatic. What stayed was the feeling of one afternoon beside the lake: the sun on the water, reeds moving gently at the edge and dragonflies passing through the warm air.

I remember being completely absorbed by them. Their wings appeared too delicate for the speed they carried. One moment they hovered almost motionless; the next they turned sharply and were gone. Their colours changed with every movement, sometimes bright and unmistakable, sometimes lost against the water.

My father and I watched them for hours.

Perhaps that is why the day remained. There was nothing we needed to do and nowhere else we had to be. We simply sat beside the water and paid attention to what was there.

The Dragonflies at the Lake was created from that memory: a child, a father and an ordinary summer afternoon made lasting by the natural world.

Where Water Holds the Light

Dragonflies seem to belong equally to water and air.

They begin their lives beneath the surface before emerging into a world of sunlight and flight. As adults, they return to lakes, ponds and rivers, moving above the same waters from which their lives began.

There is a compelling contrast in the way they appear. Their wings are almost transparent, yet their flight is fast and precise. They can hover in one place, dart forwards or turn suddenly, catching the sun for an instant before vanishing into shadow.

Beside the stillness of a lake, every movement becomes more visible. Water reflects the light, reeds provide moments of rest and the open air gives each dragonfly room to perform its brief, intricate flight.
