The Story Behind the Scarf

Some childhood memories remain because they are ordinary.

Years later, we may forget the order of events, where we stayed or what happened on each day of a holiday. What survives instead is a collection of smaller impressions: the creak of a wooden chair, striped canvas giving slightly beneath your weight, sand underfoot and wind against your face.

The deckchair belonged to that kind of memory.

From it, the beach could be watched at the pace of a child. The sea came closer and then withdrew. People crossed the sand carrying towels, buckets and folded chairs. Families settled into their places for the day, arranging themselves near enough to the water to hear it.
