Some works begin with a change in the season. Others begin with colour. The Colours of Christmas began with both.

As December approaches, much of the English landscape appears to withdraw. Trees stand bare, daylight shortens and frost removes colour from fields and gardens. Yet not everything disappears.

Berries remain bright in the hedgerows. Pine keeps its depth of green. Ivy continues across walls and trees, holding its leaves while much of the landscape rests. When low winter sunlight reaches frozen ground, even the cold seems briefly gilded.

These are not simply festive colours placed upon the natural world. They already belong there.
