The Story Behind the Scarf

A childhood cat can become part of the way we first understand loyalty, mystery and friendship.

Sam was a ginger tom, but in my imagination he carried the spirit of something far wilder. I saw him as a tiger: brave, watchful, beautiful and entirely his own creature. He moved through the world with the quiet certainty peculiar to cats, and I followed him into all the adventures childhood could invent.

Together, we had a world that belonged only to us. The garden was no longer bounded by fences. It became a jungle filled with hidden paths and unknown creatures. Rooms became kingdoms to defend and ordinary afternoons became expeditions. At the centre of it all was Sam, fierce and loyal, leading the way.

Looking back, what remains is not one particular moment but the feeling of him: the warmth of his fur, the force of his personality and the sense that he belonged to me while always belonging completely to himself.

He was a companion, but never a possession. That was part of his magic.

Sam the Tiger was created to preserve that memory. It is not simply a portrait of a ginger cat, but an attempt to capture the magnificent creature I believed him to be and the private world we once shared.

A Cat Made Larger by Love

There is a particular kind of friendship that can exist between a child and an animal. It requires no explanation and very few words. The animal becomes a confidant, a guardian and a willing participant in adventures that no one else can see.

To an adult, Sam may have appeared to be an ordinary ginger tomcat. To me, there was nothing ordinary about him. He possessed the strength of a tiger, the mystery of a creature from another world and the unwavering presence of a true friend.

That is the feeling held within the scarf: childhood imagination, wildness, loyalty and the deep affection we carry for the animals who helped shape us.
