As a boy in the 1940s, he became seriously ill. Whooping cough first, then bronchitis. His chest rattled, his strength went, and for a time it seemed he might not recover as he should. The remedies were old ones: goose fat rubbed into his chest, malt, sugar, strange mixtures passed down through the family like household spells.

When nothing seemed to work, his mother took him to the sea.

Every weekend, even in winter, she wrapped him in blankets and sat him in a chair on Blackpool beach. The wind cut across the sand. The sky was low and grey. The sea moved in and out with its slow, patient rhythm. She believed the air would help him.

Somehow, he got better.

Blackpool Rock came from that memory: a small boy, a mother, a cold beach, and the waves breathing in and out beside him.
