The Gulls is a limited-edition silk scarf inspired by coastal birds, childhood holidays and the unmistakable sound of the British seaside. Made from 100% mulberry silk twill and finished with hand-rolled hems, it celebrates the coast as it really lives in memory: grey sometimes, windy often, imperfect always and somehow full of strange joy.

The scarf began with a sound.

The cry of gulls is not beautiful in the usual sense. It is sharp, loud, argumentative and impossible to mistake. Yet for many of us, it carries the whole coast inside it.

It is the sound of wet towels, windbreaks leaning in the sand and chips eaten from paper. It recalls rain on caravan roofs, arcades glowing in the evening and the sea somewhere close, even before it can be seen.

As a child, I knew only that gulls meant I was away. The usual rules had softened, time felt wider and a day spent doing almost nothing could still feel completely full.

Only 5 pieces are available worldwide. Once sold, The Gulls will never be reprinted.

The Story Behind the Scarf

The British coast is not always blue skies and perfect sand.

Often, it is damp hair, cold hands, noisy birds and the wind trying to take your lunch. It is salt drying on your skin, vinegar in the air and the stubborn belief that the weather might improve if everyone simply waits long enough.

That is part of its charm.

The seaside holidays I remember were not flawless, but they had an atmosphere that perfection could never reproduce. There were towels that refused to dry, sand in places it should never have reached and caravan windows blurred by rain.

Then the clouds would lift. The beach would brighten, the sea would return to colour and the whole day would seem rescued.

Through it all came the gulls. They argued above rooftops, watched from railings and circled every open packet of chips with professional interest. Their cries formed part of the place as completely as the sea itself.

The Gulls was created from that rough, affectionate memory of the British coast and from the way one familiar sound can return us to it instantly.

The Sound That Means the Sea

Sound can reach a memory before an image does.

A gull heard far inland can make the coast appear in the mind without warning. For a moment, there is open water beyond the buildings, salt in the air and a promenade somewhere close.

The cry does not belong to one particular town or beach. It carries fragments of many holidays at once: amusement arcades after rain, harbour walls, fish and chips, caravan parks, piers and long walks beside a sea that changes colour with the weather.

That is what gives the gull its place within the scarf. It is not simply a coastal bird used as decoration. It is a messenger from somewhere remembered.

Each Thackray scarf begins with words. A story becomes an image, and the image becomes silk. Here, that story is carried through gulls, weather and movement, and through the emotional pull of a coastline that never needed to be perfect to be loved.

Why It Makes a Special Gift

The Gulls was created for people who feel themselves drawn back to the sea.

It will appeal to seaside lovers, bird enthusiasts and those who treasure memories of British coastal holidays. Its story recognises the coast as something lived rather than idealised, filled with humour, weather and familiar imperfection.

This is not a novelty seaside gift or a simple bird motif. It is a limited-edition piece of silk artwork inspired by the sound and atmosphere of the British coast.

It makes a thoughtful birthday, Christmas, Mother’s Day, anniversary, retirement or thank-you gift for someone who loves coastal walks, seaside towns or gulls. It may be particularly meaningful for someone who grew up holidaying by the sea or still feels more at home when they can hear it.

Made from 18-momme mulberry silk and finished with hand-rolled hems, the scarf is designed to be worn and kept. With only 5 pieces available worldwide, it is also genuinely rare. Once the edition has sold, the design will not be produced again.

How to Wear The Gulls

At 90cm x 90cm, The Gulls is a generously sized square silk scarf that can be folded around the neck, draped over the shoulders, tied in the hair or styled as part of an outfit.

As the silk is folded and tied, different parts of the coastal artwork come into view. Gulls, movement and smaller details can be brought forward in different arrangements, allowing the design to change each time it is worn.

When it is not being worn, it remains a collectable piece of original textile art inspired by seaside memory and the unmistakable atmosphere of the British coast.
