The Story Behind the Scarf

The British coast is not always blue skies and perfect sand.

Often, it is damp hair, cold hands, noisy birds and the wind trying to take your lunch. It is salt drying on your skin, vinegar in the air and the stubborn belief that the weather might improve if everyone simply waits long enough.

That is part of its charm.

The seaside holidays I remember were not flawless, but they had an atmosphere that perfection could never reproduce. There were towels that refused to dry, sand in places it should never have reached and caravan windows blurred by rain.

Then the clouds would lift. The beach would brighten, the sea would return to colour and the whole day would seem rescued.

Through it all came the gulls. They argued above rooftops, watched from railings and circled every open packet of chips with professional interest. Their cries formed part of the place as completely as the sea itself.

A gull heard far inland can make the coast appear in the mind without warning. For a moment, there is open water beyond the buildings, salt in the air and a promenade somewhere close.

The cry does not belong to one particular town or beach. It carries fragments of many holidays at once: amusement arcades after rain, harbour walls, fish and chips, caravan parks, piers and long walks beside a sea that changes colour with the weather.

That is what gives the gull its place within the scarf. It is not simply a coastal bird used as decoration. It is a messenger from somewhere remembered.
