How to care for a silk scarf

The care instruction supplied with your scarf comes first. Silk scarves can differ in their dyes, printing and finishes, so an instruction that suits one design may be wrong for another. If the label is missing or unclear, ask the maker before cleaning.

Between wears

Untie the scarf gently and let it air before putting it away. Keep it away from direct heat and prolonged sunlight. It is easier to avoid a mark than to remove one: allow perfume and skincare to dry before the silk touches them, and take care around rough jewellery, zips and bag fittings.

Put the scarf somewhere clean and dry rather than leaving it tied tightly on a bag or pushed into the bottom of one. A little space makes the next wearing easier.

Before washing or dry cleaning

Read the care label in full. Do not assume that a hand-wash programme, a product described as gentle, or a method used on another silk item is appropriate for your scarf.

Where professional cleaning is required, choose a cleaner familiar with printed silk and explain any stains or previous treatment. Ask them to take account of the edge finish, including hand-rolled hems. If the label permits washing, follow its instructions rather than a general internet recipe.

If something spills

Avoid rubbing the fabric or experimenting with stain removers. Note what caused the mark and seek advice promptly from the maker or an experienced cleaner. Tell them what, if anything, you have already applied.

Putting the scarf away

Store it clean and fully dry, away from sunlight and sources of damp. Fold loosely and avoid crushing it beneath heavier objects. Keep the care information with the scarf, particularly if it is part of a collection or will eventually be given to someone else.

A presentation box is useful only when its contents are dry and the place in which it is stored is suitable. Check scarves that are put away for long periods rather than assuming the box makes them invulnerable.

Creases and hems

Follow the label before applying an iron or steam. Heat and moisture are not interchangeable solutions for every silk finish. If you are unsure, ask for advice instead of experimenting on a visible part of the design.

A hand-rolled hem has a rounded shape. Mention that finish when discussing pressing with a cleaner; the edge deserves the same attention as the printed surface.

For a scarf given as a present

Pass on the care instructions with the scarf. The recipient should be able to enjoy wearing it without having to guess how to look after it.
