Roads were slower, maps were folded badly, luggage had to fit somewhere it was never designed to fit, and the journey could acquire a character quite separate from the destination. Motoring at its most romantic still carries something of that idea: the machine as a means of seeing the world rather than merely reducing the time between two places.

The culture around cars is broad enough to contain contradiction. A concours lawn and a muddy rally stage. The polished restraint of a grand tourer and the mechanical violence of a racing car. Chrome, leather, aluminium, paper maps, pit boards, driving gloves, hotel keys. It is one of the few modern subjects in which engineering, travel, sport, memory and design meet without needing much introduction.

This is where Thackray’s motoring world begins. Design becomes biography surprisingly quickly.

That is why motoring events attract people who may arrive for very different reasons. Some know chassis numbers and racing histories. Others are there for design, fashion, photography or the simple pleasure of standing beside something beautiful and improbable. Goodwood’s Festival of Speed and Revival, the British Grand Prix, Le Mans and international concours gatherings such as Pebble Beach each occupy a different corner of motoring culture. Black brought weight and structure; pale pink softened it. Together, they created something that felt formal and playful at once.
